Kelly Quarles
Kelly can be described as a fun loving, knowledgeable and confident woman who is savvy in business and politics. She has a strong desire to explore the world and tell it's stories. She is very upbeat, loves life and brings all kinds of interesting ideas to the table.
Campus Involvement
While at Ball State Kelly majored in Telecommunications and Journalism with a specialization in News and Politics. She was a senator in the Student Government Association serving as the Whip of the Academic Affairs committee and secratrey of the Organizational Caucus. Kelly joined the Society of Collegiate Scholars her second semester at Ball State. She was also an officer in The Black Student Association, The Black Media Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated during her time at Ball State. Kelly also represented the Black Student Association as a member of the Homecoming court in 2010. Working in Ball State student Media is what really sparked her interest in reporting. She was a reporter for the Daily New and NewsLink Indiana.
Research Projects
Through her connections Kelly had the opportunity to do two research projects. Kelly was a member of Ball State's social media team and worked at the official Social Media Hub for the Super Bowl 46. She along with five other students tweeted from the official Super Bowl 46 twitter account answering questions and providing information to people on twitter. She served on the journalistic side of the Interactive C-SPAN Project. She and a team of six other students created an interactive program that allows viewers to not only stop and rewind C-SPAN programs, but seek biographies of senators and judges, look up court vocabulary words, find provided information about specific cases and use RSS feeds to better understand the case.
Internships
Kelly has also had three internships and has done freelance work in social media. Her first internship was for an online bridal magazine called Indiana Bride Magazine. She contributed three articles a week as well as made short videos about vendors. Her second internship was a communications intern for the largest multicultural celebration in the United States, Indiana Black Expo: Summer Celebration. She pioneered IBE's online radio station and contributed to the public relations team. Her third internship was with WTHR Channel 13 Eye Witness News. Here she learned so much about the news room, anchoring and covered a vast amount of stories including the Super Bowl and the twisters in Southern Indiana.
Hobbies
When she's not busy with school and extra curricular activities Kelly is out and about meeting new people watching the news. Toggling between the cable news networks and all of the local news networks, Kelly has her laptop and iPod touch in hand researching and tweeting about what is going on. Kelly is a socializer at heart and knowing this about herself she works part time for the most popular restaurant in Indianapolis, St. Elmos Steak House. She enjoys the busy environment and loves the business. She also enjoys volunteering at the Roy C. Buley Center and Anna's House. Kelly is an avid runner and enjoys all types of exercising including step aerobics, Zumba and the XBox Kinect. Kelly loves to play the piano, listen to music and most importantly she loves to travel and has been to more than six different countries.
