The End of an Era

The company Encyclopedia Britannica has released on their website that they will no longer produce print issues. Reporter Kelly Quarles has the story.

The weather is not the only thing heating up today. The debate of technology ending the era of print has taken a step closer to digital publishing.
Encyclopedia Britannica, the pioneering brand whose volumes have been seen in homes and libraries since it was first being published 244 years ago, is changing.
The world’s oldest English-language encyclopedia has announced they will no longer print any more publications.
It is no secret that people don’t look to books before the Internet these days, student, educators, and librarians alike don’t use the encyclopedia as much, simply because they can Google it.
(((SOT)))
Britannica, which releases a new volume every two years, vows that they will still sell the remainder of the 2010 volumes.
But promises more content for more people, more up-to-date content, and obviously quicker and easier access.
Muncie Libraries don’t carry the Encyclopedia Britannica’s new edition and haven’t for years, in fact their oldest edition is from 1997.
After tracking the use of the Encyclopedia Britannica, they find that their demographic of typically high school students and average readers aren’t looking for scholarly references.
(((SOT)))
The print version for the encyclopedia were priced at $1400 an edition. Now, a yearly online subscription is just a mere $70 dollars and apps can be purchased from anywhere between $1.99 and $4.99 a month.
Charging for an encyclopedia is the next hill for Britannica to climb. Students already have access to free encyclopedias such as Wikipedia, although not always credible, Wiki still poses as a strong competitor.

The white house is threatening to cut Republican legislation that prevent federal student loan rates from doubling this summer.
Calling the proposed $5.9 billion dollars saved after cutting a preventive health fund idea politically motivated and not serious to student problems, the White House threat was issued as the G-O-P-run House began debating.
If the legislation does pass in the House, it will stop at the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Death of Father Boniface Hardin
"I want people to remember him as a person who loved other people."
Teary eyed friends and family gather today at Martin University's Gathertorium to honor and remember Father Bonaface Hardin.
Priest, activist and educator Father Hardin was named Living Legend by the Indiana Historical Society and received special recognition as International Citizen of the Year by the International Center of Indiana.
Knowing 17 different languages, creating a research center for cycle cell and touching the lives of millions, Father Hardin was passionate about peace and solidarity.
The Father's focus was on creating a better world by giving a chance to people who other wise wouldn't have had one.
He founded Martin University in 1977 where he not only made sure every student had a mentor to connect with and talk to, but allowed a way for people to go to college to get out of the situation they are in.
Strategically placed in a neglected neighborhood, Martin University was founded on the mission of healing the environment. Martin is the only predominantly black university in Indiana.

Run Mitch,Run
Presidential candidate chatter has graced to the United States since early last year.
Now with Four Republican candidates in running, none seem to stay in the lime light long enough to secure the nomination.
This could lead the nation to a so-called "brokered" convention where the GOP nominee hasn't been chosen by the convention in Tampa.
The ongoing battle between primary candidates is prompting some in the Republican party to push for fresh candidate.
Speculation of Gov. Mitch Daniels joining the race has been up in the air even though he has consistently denied running.
All eyes were on Mitch at a luncheon today recognizing Lieutenant Governor, Becky Skillman and others.
When asked what he would do if there was a deadlock Mitch replied.

"A. It's very unlikely to happen and B. My advice would be let's find somebody else."
(((Stand Up)))
"Although here to to honor Excellence in Public Service, there is an underlying desire for Mitch Daniels to be the presidential candidate."
Daniels's closest advisor, Indiana GOP Chairman Eric Holcomb, says he believes it is unlikely for someone to jump into the election this late, but it isn't unusual to expect the unexpected.
(((SOT))) 8:26
"I would say that it's unlikely that someone jumps in nearing the convention, however I wouldn't rule it out. I think if you ruled out anything at this point you would be misguided."
Although unlikely, not out of the question. I'm Kelly Quarles Eye Witness News.
