Indiana Black Expo
Interning
As a communications intern for Indiana Black Expo I got experience in all sectors of putting on a major event. Summer Celebration had one of it's most successful years this year because it was not only safe, but the events were of good quality and a lot of people came out. I helped out in creating the online radio station as well as with many other things.
Damage Control
Since Expo 2009 had a disastrous shooting downtown, the Public Relations team was on complete damage control by the time I got there. I had the opportunity to come with the C.E.O and PR team to various news stations as well as papers to promote the positive aspects of Expo. We worked with reporters and anchors to let them have special insight on what security measures we were taking and almost to make sure that the way they handled the coverage for this year's Summer Celebration was more positive and focusing on what was going on than what happened last year.
Business Savvy
During this internship I learned a lot about small business. I was lucky enough to watch C.E.O Tonya Bell turn Expo's name around this year and keep her staff motivated and working hard. I helped out every staff member when they needed anything from answering phones, to helping write press releases, stuffing packets, working with the Public Relations people, helping out at events and what ever they asked of me. I've never worked for a small business before and realized quickly that it is very professional. The biggest things I learned were how to work well with people and how you not only have to be passionate about your business for it to succeed, but willing to work late nights and stick to business.
Online Radio
I worked on a team with Gerald Wright to create a successful online radio station that not only had music, but content. I had the freedom to put on the station what I wanted including what music I wanted as well as what stories I wanted to be on the station. This was a great way for me to get insight into the radio production world as well as

The Perks
Aside from being paid, we got to attend everything and meet pretty much everyone involved in Expo. We stayed downtown that whole weekend and helped out at pretty much every event, and had back stage passes to everything as well.
